Knoxville, TN (May 7, 2025) – A deadly head-on collision occurred Monday in Knoxville, resulting in one fatality and criminal charges for one of the drivers involved. According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the 7300 block of Millertown Pike following reports of a serious crash involving two vehicles.
The crash took place on May 5. One of the drivers, who has not been publicly identified at this time, was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel. The other driver, identified as 20-year-old Mason Shumate, was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision.
Following a preliminary investigation, officials determined that Shumate was driving under the influence at the time of the crash. As a result, he has been charged with vehicular homicide. Authorities have not released additional details regarding his condition, but the investigation remains ongoing. The impact of the crash led to a temporary shutdown of the roadway while officers and medical teams worked the scene. Law enforcement is continuing to examine the events leading up to the wreck. Witness statements and potential surveillance footage from the area are being reviewed as part of the ongoing case.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
